and much more!
What are Chocobos?
Chocobos are those large, chicken-like creatures you can ride upon, traveling through the FF7 world encounter-free. You'll need the Chocobo Lure materia (an Independent materia buyable from Choco Bill at the chocobo Ranch) to get chocobos. All in all, there are five types of chocobos:
Regular Chocobos can't do much,
but they do give you the usual encounter-free rides.
Mountain Chocobos can cross over
mountains.
River Chocobos can cross rivers
and shallows near the coasts, but they can't cross waterfalls.
Mountain-and-River Chocobos can do what Green
and Blue Chocobos can, and they can also cross waterfalls.
Ocean Chocobos can do everything
and go everywhere. With them, you can cross any obstacle that
stands in your way (including oceans; hence, the name), and there
won't be any place in the FF7 you can't reach.
Later on in the game (Discs 2 & 3), you'll be given the chance to breed chocobos. With this handy-dandy guide, you'll soon have all five chocobos for your use, though it'll take a lot of sweat, patience, time, and money. But before starting, you'll need a couple of things first:
Chocobo Lure materia (which you probably have by now), purchased
from Choco Bill in the Chocobo Ranch.
At least 4 stables. You can rent
these for 10,000 gil each by talking to the old man in the house
near the Chocobo Ranch. The maximum amount you can rent is 6, by
the way.
3 Carob Nuts from Vlakorados (the creature you see on your
right), which can be found in the grassy area near Bone Village.
1 Zeio Nut from a Goblin (the
creature you see on your left), found in the Goblin Islands
directly east from the Chocobo Sage's dwelling.
40 Sylkis Greens from the Chocobo Sage. They sell for 5000 gil each, so
all in all, you'll be spending 200,000 gil on this.
Step 1
Capture a "Great Chocobo" from the Mideel area and a
"Good Chocobo" from the peninsula near Corel prison.
(You'll find out whether they're poor, average, good, great, or
wonderful when you ask Choco Bill to move them in.) Make sure
these chocobos are of the opposite genders and mate them with a
Carob Nut. This should produce a Green or Blue Chocobo.
Step 2
Find another "Great Chocobo" from Mideel that is of the
opposite sex from the newborn. Mate the two with your second
Carob Nut, and this should produce a Blue Chocobo if you had a
Green one, and vice versa.
Step 3
Feed your Blue and Green Chocobos 10 Sylkis Green each, which
causes their Speed, Intelligence, Stamina, and Compatability to
all rise. Then head to the Chocobo Square in the Gold Saucer and
speak with Ester, who will let you race your chocobos. Your Green
and Blue Chocobos must each win 6 races each in order to be
promoted from Class C to Class A.
Step 4
Head back to the Chocobo Ranch and mate your Class A chocobos
with a Carob Nut. (Don't be afraid to mate a parent with its
child, though it does sound a bit freaky
) This union should
produce a Black Chocobo.
Step 5
High-tail it to the Icicle area and capture a "Wonderful
Chocobo" whose sex is opposite that of your Black Chocobo.
Feed this future couple 10 Sylkis Greens each and head back to
the Chocobo Square. Repeat Step 3 with this couple, raising them
from Rank C to Rank A.
Step 6
Mate these two with a Zeio Nut. Congratulations! You're now the
proud owner of a Gold Chocobo. (Be sure not to mistake the Gold
Chocobo for a regular yellow one. They look alike, but the Gold
one's brighter.)
Tips & Tricks
Chocobos' gendes are determined when you move them from outside to the stable. Save the game before doing any moving, so just in case you've got the wrong genders, you can restart and try again.
Choco Bill will often tell you that newly-born chocobos and those that just mated shouldn't try to produce offspring right away. To counterat this problem, simply capture four new wild chocobos from anywhere. (Those, by the way, you don't need to move into the stables).
It's not necessary to feed your chocobos Sylkis Greens and have them race in the Chocobo Square, though doing this will increase your chances of getting your desired chocobo.
With
bred chocobos, you can further your access to many places (as the
Highwind can't land on anything but grass, except in the area nxt
to the City of the Ancients). Four caves are accessible through
specially bred chocobos, each wielding materia worth the effort:
1. The first cave yields the Mime materia. It's found in the
Wutai area, east of the two bridges. Use any bred chocobo to get
here.
2. The second cave, accessible with any bred chocobo as well,
contains the HP<>MP materia. You'll find its location
over the mountains north of North Corel.
3. The third one, yielding the Quadra Magic materia, is located
on an island east of Mideel. Use a Blue, Black, or Gold Chocobo
to get here.
4. Last, but definitely not least, is the one located in
the uncharted Round Island (see the World Map), accessible only through a bred
chocobo. You'll find the Knights of the Round materia here.
Besides those caves, there are also other places to visit with bred chocobos. Try going to the Ancient Forest (atop a plateau east of Cosmo Canyon, accessible through a Green, Black, or Gold Chocobo), which yields the Typhon and Slash-All materia, and Cloud's Apocalypse Sword (with triple materia growth). You can also reach Lucrecia's Cave with any bred chocobo (though you can also commandeer the submarine through an underwater tunnel to get here). This third cave is where Lucrecia (Vincent's old love) lives, and where you can receive Vincent's ultimate weapon (Death Penalty) and his Level 4 limit break (Chaos).
