In addition to the materia you use directly, there other others that you use indirectly. These materia are very important to the game's storyline and are listed below.
White Materia
Also known as Holy,

Black
Materia
Found in the Temple
of the Ancients, this materia is used by Sphiroth to summon
Meteor, the most destructive form of magic ever, to destroy the
Planet.
Huge
Materia
All in all, there
are four of these materia. Although finding them is completely
optional, they yield spectacular prizes. The four types of Huge
Materia (green, red, yellow, and blue) can be found later on in
the game in each of these places: the Underwater Reactor near
Junon, a train in Mt. Corel, Ft. Condor, and the rocket in Rocket
Town. Here's what each of them does:
Green: trade all 21
mastered Spell materia to this for a Master Magic materia.
Red: trade all 16 mastered Summon materia to this for a Master
Summon materia.
Yellow: trade mastered Deathblow, Manipulate, Mime, Morph, Sense,
Steal, and Throw materia to this for a Master Command materia.
Blue: take the Bahamut and Neo Bahamut materia to this and you'll
receive Bahamut ZERO.
