The Kalm Traveler

In the easy-going town of Kalm, located northeast of Midgar, you'll find an old man residing in the second floor of the house of the area's eastern portion. This man, who is often but not formally referred to as the Kalm Traveler, is the source of many valuable items tradeable for various other hard-to-get items. Though it'll take oyu lots of toil and hours (of real sweat and real time) to get them, the results are gorgeous. After Meteor is summoned (Discs 2 & 3), visit him and this super-hard optional quest begins.

The Guide Book

A map that was sunk along with the ship...

The Kalm Traveler will ask you to get three things for his "spiritual quest." The first is the Guide Book, which you can obtain through the Ghost Ship enemy in the aquarium below Junon. First, get the enemy's HP down low, then Morph it into a Guide Book. Take this to the Kalm Traveler and you'll receive the Underwater Materia, which is absolutely useless except for the task of defeating the Emerald Weapon.

The Earth Harp

A harp that soothes those who hear it...

Swimming leisurely about in the deep oceans near Junon is the ominous Emerald Weapon, which has ONE MILLION HP!!! To defeat this prodigious being of the ocean deep, I recommend you have these following materia:
• Knights of the Round
• Mime (at least two)
• Final Attack + Phoenix/Revive (though Phoenix is better)
• many mastered HP Plus
• some MP Plus (a bit more on the optional side, but they help)
• a lot of Counter Attack (this too, optional)
• MP Turbo (yet another optional one)
• lots of Megalixirs
• Underwater (to get rid of the twenty-minute time limit)

You'll need to get the specified materia in high levels, if not mastered. To do this, I recommend you equip the above materia on Cloud's Apocalypse Sword or Cid's Scimitar (which both have triple growth effects) or on Rune Armlets (not as good with only double growth, but what else to do...?). "Train" the materia in the lagoon-like area in the Northern Cave, looking especially for Magic Pots and Grounders, wchich offer tremendous amounts of AP.

Now you'll need to choose the characters who'll fight in the upcoming battle. It doesn't really matter who you choose, but try to get those with their Ultimate Weapons, level 4 limit breaks, and a lot of Magic attribute points. Equip one person with Knights of the Round + MP Turbo, the other two with Mime (or all three of them if you have enough), one person with Final Attack + Phoenix, a bunch of HP Pluses to get everyone as close to 9999 as possible, MP Pluses as well, and a lot of Counter Attacks to everyone (for each Counter Attack materia a person has is how many times he'll strike back when hit). Oh, and don't forget to equip the Underwater materia to someone.

If you're all prepared, hop onto the mutineered Shinra submarine and dive into the ocean bordering Junon. Once you spot the Emerald Weapon, crash into it and prepare for a spectacular battle!

Emerald WeaponStart off by casting Knights of the Round and have everyone keep on miming that until four materia-like orbs appear on the Weapon's body. At this point, they'll begins shooting rays that will deplete your HP/MP, subsequently causing your characters to counter attack. Kill off the orbs first (preferrably with another Knights of the Round attack) then focus on the main target. And when the Emerald Weapon's HP gets low, it will cast the Aire Tam Storm, which will cause 9999 HP worth of damage on all your opponents. (The Final Attack + Phoenix/Revive should come in handy right about now...) Keep casting Knights of the Round and miming that until the Emerald Weapon bites the dust.

Your reward is the Earth Hapr, which won't do you any good unless you take it to the Kalm Traveler. He'll trade it to you for Master Magic, Master Summon, and Master Command materia. What a sweet deal!

The Desert Rose

A rose that blooms once every 1000 years...

After defeating the Emerald Weapon, equip your new Master Materia. Also, equip the person with the Master Summon with a W-Summon materia and everyone with some sort of fire protection. Once you're through with this quick preparation, head to the Corel Desert area and look for a red protrusion. Head smack-dab into in and the Ruby Weapon pops out of the sand, ready for battle.

Ruby WeaponBefore challenging the Ruby Weapon, kill off two of your allies. Doing this will make the fight easier as the Ruby Weapon will then bury its tentacles in the ground. Have your remaining character revive the others and blast away by W-Summoning Knights of the Round and Hades. Ignore normal physical attacks as they do no damage, and beware of the tentacles' attacks as they diminish A LOT of HP and cause random status ailments. (Did I forget to mention to equip everyone with Ribbons?)

When you're through fighting this monstrosity, you'll receive the Desert Rose. Take this to the Kalm traveler for a free Gold Chocobo. Yet note that you porbably had the Gold Chocobo already, otherwise oyu wouldn't have had Knights of the Round. But look on the bright side: you've beaten two creatures even tougher than Sephiroth. Aren't EXTREME bragging rights involved?
