Evading the Midgar Zolom

Head east until you find a rustic house in the middle of a grassland area. Enter and you'll find that it's a chocobo ranch. Be sure and talk to the chocobo nearest you when you enter and answer "Wark" to it. You'll then receive the Choco/Mog materia, the first of your powerful Summon materia.

Next, enter the house and speak to the old man, who'll tell you that he saw a black-caped man (obviously Sephiroth) pass through the swamps not too long ago. However, he tells you that Sephiroth was probably killed as a thirty-foot long flying serpent, the Midgar Zolom, guards the swamps, killing off all those that it comes upon. He then suggests that you get a chocobo to help you cross the swamps safely and evade the Midgar Zolom.

ChocoboHead on over to the barn and buy the Chocobo Lure materia from Choco Bill for 2000 gil I think it was. Also, to help you out, get one or two Mimett Greens. Next ,head outdoors and walk around the chocobo tracks for awhile until you encounter a chocobo. To make sure it doesn't run away, feed it a Mimett Green. You'll then have to kill the other enemies to claim the chocobo. Be sure not to attack the chocobo, or it'll run away, and don't use offensive spells paired up with an All materia either. If you've done all I've said, the chocobo should be yours.

Evading the Midgar ZolomNote, however, that just because you've got a chocobo without you doesn't mean that the Midgar Zolom won't get you. It simply means that you can outrun the flying serpent. Proceed with caution to the cave southwest of the swamp and look out for the Zolom's shadow. If you should come in contact with the shadow, get ready for a gruesome battle!

However, if you want to get the powerful enemy skill Beta, which the Midgar Zolom casts, follow these steps. Firstly, equip one person with the Enemy Skill materia and Fire + Elemental on his/her armor. Cloud is a good pick for this since he probably has the highest max HP right now. Also, have someone in your group have the Poison and Restore materia. Next, confront the Midgar Zolom and Bio right away. If the Midgar Zolom doesn't turn green, cast it again. Keep on attacking it and healing until it stands up to its full height. At that time, have only the person without the Enemy Skill or the Restore materia attack. Why? It's because the Zolom will eventually do a move that'll cast one person out of the battle, usually the person that hit it last. Now, attack it with all your might, but have the person with the Enemy Skill materia with an HP of over 500 at least. The Zolom will then cast Beta. Heal up and revive ASAP, then kill it off. At that time, the Beta materia should be yours. Phew!
