Corel Prison
You land in Corel Prison, surrounded by miles of desert and deadly quicksands, where the worst of the worst get thrown in and none go out, where diabolical monsters roam and petty thieves thrive, where... well, you get the idea. It's basically a wretched hellhole where you'll find Barret lingering to the south through the gate. Speak to him and he runs. Save your game in the nearby Sav Point, then head south and find Barret in the house to the southeast. Your other allies appear shortly after, and a flashback told by Barret ensues.
Afterwards, head west and enter the trailer (you might want to rest at the trailer's cab). Talk to Mr. Coates and he'll flatly state that you can't leave without the bosses' permission.
Head back to the prison gate to the north. Head out of the gate and further north, then east through a break in the fence. Go east again and you'll land in a junkyard. Go north and oyu'll find Barret's old "friend" Dyne, who dreams of destroying everything, even himself (demented or what?).
Despite Barret's attempts to fraternize with Dyne, the angered boss attacks, and a mano a mano battle between him and Barret (and only Barret) ensues. Cast Haste immediately in that battle, and heal constantly. Watch out for Dyne's final attack, which is a doozy.
After the battle, Dyne leaps hands Barret a memento for Marlene, then leaps over the cliff to his death. After that, you appear in the trailer with Mr. Coates, who, seeing the pendant in your possession, tells you that there's only one way out: win a chocobo race. Ester, a chocobo-racing expertise, soon appears and offers to help manage Cloud, who emerges back to the old Saucer with her.
You soon arrive in teh jockey room. Ester
leaves for awhile to help get things organized, a perfect time
for you to get the Ramuh materia in the niche next to the chocobo
racing poster. When Ester returns, talk to her and prepare for
your race. Use your personal techniques to help you win the race,
and if you fail don't worry: you can always try again. But if you
fail too much, the game gives you a break and lets you win in
Automatic Mode.
