Misc. Tips & Tricks
Here's a few other tips and tricks that are somewhat "minor" in the fact that they don't take up too much room. That's why I put them all into this handy-dandy mini-guide. They are:
Unlimited Item Duplication
Turtle Paradise Newsletters
The Materia Caves
Deafeating the Ultimate Weapon
Get Your Own Domicile
Morph-able Enemies
Excavations in Bone Village
Weak against Holy
There's an easy way to duplicate items infinitely (up to 99, actually) and it's for free! All you'll need is the W-Item materia, found later on in Sector 8 of Midgar. First, select the item you want duplicated, then select another one. Cancel the second one and the first one is automatically duplicated (a bug or intentionally put there...who knows?). Repeat these steps until you're satisfied with the number of items you have. But note as the W-Item command can only be used in battle, you can only duplicate items usable in battle.
There are six newletters scattered all over the world. If you read all of them, head over to Turtle Paradise in Wutai and tell the owner you've done so. He'll then reward you with a Power Source, Guard Source, Magic Source, Luck Source, Speed Source, Mind Source, and Megalixer. The locations of the newsletters are as follows:
Second floor of
house in Sector 5 slums
First floow of Shinra Tower, next to the elevators
"SHOP" sign in Gold Saucer's Ghost Inn
Tiger Lily Arms Shop in Cosmo Canyon
Scond floor of inn in Cosmo Canyon
Yuffie's house in Wutai (after completing her optional
quest)
With specially bread chocobos (see the Chocobo Breeding Guide for more info), you can find these unique materia in various caves scattered throughout the FF7 globe:
Mime: With this
materia, you can copy the any of your ally's last action,
excluding limit breaks, and the best thing about it is that it's
cost free. You'll find the cave yielding this materia with the
aid of any bred chocobo, located east of the suspension bridges
in the Wutai area.
HP <> MP: This materia will switch your HP and
MP levels (eg, if you have 6257 HP and 503 MP, equipping this
materia will give you 503 HP and 6257 MP). With any bred chocobo,
you'll find this cave by crossing the mountains north of North
Corel.
Quadra Magic: This materia will allow you to cast a spell
randomly 4 times in one turn, for the cost of casting it only
once! (However, the spell's effectiveness drops 44%.) You'll find
this cave with a blue, black, or gold chocobo at the tip of the
archipelago containing Mideel.
Knights of the Round: The most powerful spell of all, this
materia will allow you to cast the King Arthur and the Knights of
the Round Table, who cause about 100,000 HP worth of damage!
Isn't that amazing or what? With only a gold chocob, race over to
the northeastern part of the globe and you should be able to find
it.
Deafeating the Ultimate Weapon
After you defeat the Ultimate Weapon (the black dragon that destroys Mideel later on in the game), you might notice it flying about leisurely in the skies of the FF7 world. After defeating the Diamond Weapon (the white monster that starts for a collision course towards Midgar), it's possible to put up another fight with the Ultimate Weapon. You'll find it hovering above a lake in the Junon area, and with the Highwind, ram into it and a fight will ensue. You won't win or get any rewards as the wimp runs away, but keep on ramming into and it'll eventually stop over Cosmo Canyon. Deafeat it there (by the way, it's final attack is Shadow Flare, an enemy skill that takes A LOT of damage), and you'll be rewarded with tons of EXP, AP, and gil, as well as Cloud's ultimate weapon, Ultima.
If you've got some cash to burn (specifically 300,000 gil), you can buy your very own house in Costa del Sol. It all happens on Disc 2, where you should enter the house above the tourist info box and talk to the man sleeping on the bed inside. Pay him the cash, then the house is all yours! There, you can sleep for free any time you'd like.
With the Morph materia (found in the Temple of the Ancients), you can change certain enemies into items. To do this, get the target's HP low (Gravity spells work well here), then kill them using the Morph attack. Most enemies can change into items, but some cannot. Try it out and test out which ones can morph into valuable items.
There are, of course, enemies that change into more valuable items. On Cactus Island (see the World Map), you'll find a petit enem called Cactuer. Morph it and it'll change into a Tetra Elemental, which drains all fire-, ice-, lightning, and earth-based attacks. Also, look in the Northern Cave for MAster Tonberry (the guy with a star floating above his head). Avoid gravity spells on him, but if you can successfully Morph him, he'll change into a Ribbon, which prevents you from any abnormalities.
Also,
stroll about inside the Sunken Gelnika Plane for unlimited
Sources (Power Source, Mind Source, etc.). You can find all six
there by Morphing the enemies within:
Unknown = Power Source
Unknown 2 = Guard Source
Unknown 3 = Magic Source
Poodler = Speed Source
Bad Rap = Luck Source
Serpent = Mind Source
Missed an important item? No problem! Just head over to Bone Village and hire workers to excavate it for you. Also, if you head back to Midgar after Meteor has been summoned (but not by parachuting in), you'll find a man pacing outside the locked gates and mumbling on about how he lost a key on an excavation trip. After speaking to him, head back to Bone Village and hire diggers to look for "Normal treasure." With a little luck, you'll find the ey to Midgar. With this newly-found item, you can re-enter Midgar.
If you find an enemy that is "Weak against Holy," or weak against curative magic, it'll be real easy to get rid of them. (Examples of these are Gi Nattak, Zenene, Ghost Ship, and Dragon Zombie.) Here's a list of items and spells and how much damage they do on these "undead" creatures.
