Places
Ancient Forest: located atop a plateau east of Cosmo Canyon, this place is accessible only through specially bred chocobos, unless you destroy the Ultimate Weapon first. In this forest, you'll find the Typhon materia, the Slash-All Materia, and Cloud's Apocalypse sword. (See the section on the Ancient Forest for more info.)
Bone Village: a quaint little location on the borders of the Sleeping Forest, Bone Village is an archaeologist's paradise. Here, you'll be able to excavate the Lunar Harp as well as various other items you missed during the game.
Cactus Island: travel to Cosmo Canyon and head straight south until you end up here. Nothing much is here, except for the Cactuers, which you can morph into Tetra Elementals.
Cave of hte Gi: located beneth Cosmo Canyon and sealed off from civilization by Bugenhagen, this is where Nanaki's quest takes place. It was the site of a gruesome battle between Cosmo Canyon and the tribe of teh Gi, and it's currently haunted by the ghosts of those slain in that battle.
Chocobo Ranch: this rustic locale is located smack-dab in the middle of the Grasslands are east of Midgar. Here, you'll be able to get the supplies, tips, and stables you need to breed chocobos (see the section on Breeding Chocobos for more info).
Chocobo Sage's House: isolated in a valley north of Bone Village, this is the home of the most profound and most forgetful chocobo expert on the Planet. (See also the section on the Chocobo Sage.) Be sure to talk to the Green Chocobo Within for an Enemy Skill materia.
Corel Prison/Desert: these places are located south of North Corel. Considered to be the garbage dump of the Gold Saucer, they aren't exactly the iseal vacation spots.
Corral Valley: a place you must cross to get from the Forgotten Capital to the Icicle Inn.
Cosmo Canyon: a hot spot for those seeking mystical knowledge. The hometown of Red XIII, you'll be able to stop here often to seek the wisdom and guidance of Bugenhagen. Later on, you'll drop off the Huge Materia here.
Costa del Sol: the place to be when you want to get a tan, Costa del Sol is loacted on the eastern edge of the West Continent. After getting the Buggy, you'll be able to stop by here and return to the East Continent by stowing away on a cargo ship (it'll cost you 100 gil though).
Crater: located atop Gaea's Cliff, the place where Jenova crashed into the Planet years and years ago.
Da-Chao Statues: located near Wutai, these
statues represent mighty gods that protect Wutai. At one point,
Don Corneo will hold Yuffie and Elena hostage here. Later on,
when you've found the Leviathan Scales in the Underwater Reactor
near Junon, head back here and douse the fires in a cave to
receive the Steal As Well materia.
Forgotten Capital: also known as the City of the Ancients, you'll find this shell-like city beyond the Sleeping Forest. HEre's the place where Aeris will die (weep, weep...)and where you'll pick up Holy later in the game.
Fort Condor: southeast of Junon, Ft. Condor for all you strategy gamers. It's constantly under attack by the Shinra, who want to drive away its townspeople and the humongous bird that sits atop the reactor in it. Stop by often to play war games (see the section on War Games in Ft. Condor for more info), and you will finally be able to drive away the Shinra later on in the game and receive the Phoenix and Huge materia for doing so.
Frostbite Cave: located in the Great Glacier, you can use this cave to exit the Great Glacier and re-enter the Icicle area.
Gaea's Cliff: found north of the Icicle Inn, this frigid mountain face has claimed the lives of many climbers. You must cross this treacherous cliffside to get to Whirlwind Maze.
Goblin Islands: just northeast of the East Continent, you'll find Goblins a-plenty here (what else did you expect?). Goblins give you two semi-important things: the Enemy Skill Goblin Punch and Zeio Nuts. Other than that, they're just cheap prey.
The Gold
Saucer: the Las Vegas of FF7, this pleasure palce is accessible
by takeing the ropeway west of North Corel. Stop by here often
for its many fun and games, but note that you are often prompted
to use GP, not gil, within (GP can be won in various places
inside or can be traded for gil [100 gil=1GP] from a man that
ocassionally appears outside the entrance). You can buy a
one-time pass for 3000 gil or a lifetime one for 30,000, and
here's what you'll find inside:
Chocobo Sqaure: bet
on racers for GP or item prizes. Once you're able to breed
chocobos, you'll be given the chance to race them here. You'll
win various prizes here, including the Cat's Bell, the Sneak
Attack materia, and a lot of GP. If you win enough games, Ester
awards you with a TON of prizes.
Battle Square: test your fighting skills here by challenging
various enemies and winning such prizes as Cloud' level 4 Limit
Break (Omnislash) and the W-Summon materia. Get enough BP and
you'll be invited to a Special Battle, where you can win the
Final Attack materia. (See the section on the Battle
Arena for more
info.)
Wonder Square: basically an arcade were you can win a fair amount
of GP, you can also trade your GP here for prizes. And just in
case you wanted to know, the first ???? is Reagan Greens; the
second, a Gil Plus materia; and the third, an EXP Plus materia.
Ghost Inn: spend the night here for GP or
stop by the Item Shop. Also, don't forget to read the
"SHOP" sign next to the Item Shop's entrance; it's
actually a Turtle Paradise Newsletter.
Speed Square: a virtual reality shooting game. Win enough points
and you'll receive a Speed Plus materia.
Event SquarE: special events ocassionally occur here.
Round Square: take a tour of the Gold Saucer via gondola with two
people.
Gongaga: a town found in the middle of the jungle areas south of the Gold Saucer, Gongaga was destroyed by a reactor explosion years ago, killing off many of the village's residents. Stop by the "junky" reactor nearby to pick up the Titan materia.
Great Glacier: situated between the Icicle Inn and Gaea's Cliff, you must cross this place in the middle of the game. Be quick, though, since staying outside in the cold too lond will give oyu a bad case of frostbite (ie, you'll pass out).
Icicle Inn: located on the icy areas of the North Continent, this place was once the residence of Ifalna and Dr. Gast. To learn more of their past, be sure to watch the videos in their house.
Junon: once a quiet fishing town, Junon was industrialized by the Shinra. Early in the game, Rufus' inauguration takes place here, and later on, stop by the nearby Underwater Reactor for a Huge Materia.
Kalm: east of Midgar, you'll find this quiet little town. Later on in the Game, find the Kalm Traveler the three items he needs and receive spectacular prizes for doing so.
Lucrecia's Cave: concealed by a waterfall in the middle of the West Continent, this lonely is where the spirit of Lucrecia, Vincent's lost love, inters. Accessible by bred chocobos or the Submarine, stop by during Disc 2 to learn more about Lucrecia's past and later on (before entering the Northern Cave) to receive Vincent's leve 4 Limit Break manual (Chaos) and his ultimate weapon (Death Penalty).
Mideel: located on the far-off islands to the southeast of the FF7 world, this is where you'll find the ill Cloud. Soon afterwards, it will be annihilated by the Ultimate Weapon.
Midgar: the
capital of the Planet and Shinra's headquarters, Midgar is where
your adventure begins. With the rich living in the floating upper
section and the poor dwelling in the polluted and sunless lowers
sections, Midgar is actually many towns (all of whose real names
have been long forgotten and replaced by sector numbers) in one.
The Church: a place
where flowers mysteriously grow in a city with no sunlight, all
thanks to the powers of a flower girl. Here's where you'll
encounter and recruit Aeris.
Mako Reactor No. 1: the game begins here, which Cloud, Barret,
and fellow AVALANCHE members (Jesse, Biggs, and Wedge) blow up.
Sector 0: the sector containing Shinra Tower.
Sector 5 Reactor: your second explosion with AVALANCHE is here,
where you'll also encounter President Rufus.
Sector 5: a pretty normal town where Aeris' house is located.
Sector 6: the sector containing Wall Market.
Sector 7: the rendezvous point after Mako Rector No. 1 is blown
up, you'll find Tifa's 7th Heaven Bar here as well as the
Beginner's Hall.
Sector 8: you'll encounter this portion of Midgar late in the
game, traveling beneath its surface. From there, you'll be able
to revisit Shinra Tower and fight Hojo.
Sewer: you'll be dumped in this stagnant stench hole after your
first encounter with Don Corneo.
Shinra Tower: rising above all Midgar is this ominous monolith,
where the top Shinra officials can be found.
Train Graveyard: infested with shosts and strewn about with
ruined trains, you'll stop by this dreary place after escaping
the stenches of the Sewer.
Wall Market: here you'll find prostitues galore, the Honey Bee
Inn, and the ever-so-obnoxious Don Corneo. Later on in the game,
when you find the Key to Midgar in Bone Village, you can stop by
here to pick up Tifa's ultimate weapon, Premium HEart.
Mt. Corel: a mountain that separates Costa del Sol from North Corel. Here, you'll find yet another Mako Reactor and, later on in the game, a Huge Materia.
Mt. Nibel: stretching between Nibelheim
and the Rocket Launch Pad area, Mt. Nibel has a very eventful
past. Here's where Sephiroth turned mad, Tifa's father was killed
and herself critically wounded, and where Cloud fulfilled his
promise.
Mythril Mine: guarded by the fearsome Midgar Zolom, this is what you'll need to pass through to get on the other side of the East Continent.
Nibelheim: on the borders of Mt. Nibel, this town has a gruesome past. All the people in it (except for Tifa) were destroyed by Sephiroth by revived by Hojo with Jenova cells. The town has since been restored, but no one seems to remember that gruesome event.
North Corel: destroyed by the Shinra years ago, the townspeople have proclaimed Barret the scapegoat of their misfortune, blaming him for letting their town fall to ruin. But on the bright side of things, it's right next to the Gold Saucer!
Northern Cave: also referred to as the Final Dungeon, this is where you'll find Sephiroth at the end of the game, though it won't be accessible until Shinra destroys its barrier.
Old Man's Cave: accessible by bringing the Buggy across the ocean via Cargo Ship, you'll find (as the name implies) an old man within. He'll tell you how many battles you've won. If the last two digits are the same and odd, he'll give you Mythril; if they match and are even, then he'll give you some sort of an item (probably a Bolt or Ice Ring). You can exchange the Mythril for an item at the Weapon Seller's house.
Railway Station: a place you'll need to go
to to get from North Corel to the fabulous Gold Saucer.
Rocket Town: the hometown of Cid and Shinra No. 26, Rocket Town is a place filled with memories of the ear when the Captain (as the townspeople call Cid) was about to venture into outer space. Though his mission was cancelled, he'll be given another chance later on in the game, as well as a chance to nab a Huge Materia.
Round Island: an uncharted islandd found in the northeast corner of the globe and accessible only via Gold Chocobo, here's where you'll find the Knights of the Round materia.
Sleeping Forest: lying between Bone Village and the Forgotten Capital, no one can pass through without first "waking" is with the music of the Lunar Harp, which can be excavated in Bone VIllage. Here, you'll also find the Kujata materia flitting in and out of sight.
Sunken Gelnika Plane: once filled with pride and glory, this plane (which you might've noticed in Junon early in the game) is now a sunken pile of junk. Withing, you'll find strange creatures and worthwhile plunder, such as Yuffie's ultimate weapon (Conformer), Cid's level 4 Limit Break manual (Highwind), and the Double Cut materia.
Temple of the Ancients: filled with the secret of the Cetra and the presence of the Black Materia, here's where Aeris where discover her destiny. Later on, though, it will be destroyed and be nothing more than a hole in the ground.
Underwater Reactor: located beneath Junon, you'll find a Huge Materia here, as well as the Leviathan Scales which you can use to douse the flames in the Da-Chao Statues.
Weapon Seller's House: found on a peninsula on the southeast portion of the West Continent is this quaint little house. Within is a weapon seller who'll tell you some info about the Keystone and the Temple of the Ancients. If you give him Mythril (obtainable from the Old Man's cave), you can choose treasure from the large chest below (containing a Gold Armlet) or the small one upstairs (containing Great Gospel, Aeris' level 4 Limit Break Manual).
Whirlwing Maze: located withing the crater atop Gaea's Cliff, this is the last place you'll visit on Disc 1, and where Sephiroth will use the Black Materia to summon Meteor.
Wutai:
this place, which is Yuffie's hometown, is located to the far
west. Here, you'll find the Da-Chao Statues and the Pagoda of the
Five Mighty Gods, where you can obtain the Leviathan materia.
